The Monoski Games:
Monopalooza is all about having fun with monoskis on our feet, in our hands or somewhere close by.
We organize and compete in any way possible because it's fun, and because we like to watch everybody
make fools of themselves as often as possible, especially if they're a little looped. At Monopalooza 2009
we didn't do any events due to the distraction of the helicopter and the layout of Powder Mtn seemed to
lose people for hours at a time. 2010 carnival events will be at Aspen Highlands at the base at ZG Grill during lunch.
The downhill will be at Snowmass on Friday the last run of the day and the pool turnament will be at Bad Billy's on Cooper St Apres on Sunday.
The Wheel Barrow Race:
2008 Champions: Terry Hennessey and Lee Dube
Trying to push someone holding a monoski in their hands isn't as easy as one might think. A couple years ago,
Boomer collapsed unable to hold himself up and in 2006 after extensive training he figured out the secret
and was untouchable.
Choose your partner early and practice a bit, monoskis in your hands track just
like they would under your feet so you gotta get 'em on edge!
The 3-Legged Race
2008 Champions: Michael Flynn and Scott Gordon
Who needs a potato sack to have fun with a 3-legged race? Not monoskiers!
How could you even do this on 2 skis or a snowboard? The perfect platform for such a competition, 3-legged racers of
the world only wish they could do an event this cool. You've gotta pace yourself or you'll twist out of the bindings leaving
you and your partner face first in the snow.
The Skate Race
2008 Champion: Michael Flynn
Flynard Skynard was a tough competitor this year, winning another event!!!
An all out sprintfest between individuals makes this one of the most hard corps competitions at the Monopalooza
carnival. You can see how determined Erik is here to beat Tucker, his hair's flyin' and you can almost see the sweat pouring
from his forehead.
The Pole Race
2008 Champion: Cancelled!
We made the 2007 race super long from the beginning to the end of the rope tow
at Alta. Tucker almost collapsed from utter exhaustion with local Rob Reger right on his tail.
In the tradition of the
Copper Mtn Pole Race, we will start at the condo access to the East of the American Eagle and will push all the way to
the bar at Double Diamond! The first year winner from 1998 will be here this year for the challenge!
Chinese Downhill
2008 Champion: Erik Larson and Scott Hicks (s 2 stages)
We did a short course at Solitude in 2006 and Eric Larsen, Pete Maskiel and
Scott Hicks were all right on Tucker's tail at 60mph! We announce the course just before we do it each year, we'll do it on a
completely cleared run that isn't too steep.
A much longer course is planned this year and as always, proper
waxing will be key if you're gonna have a chance to win.
Poker Tournament
2008 Champion: No Tourney
We were too busy for some reason in 2008 to run a poker tournament but this year
it is definately on! Boomer is donating a set of 500 poker chips for a tournament prize and of course the winner cashes out.
We'll agree on payout and buy in amount at the time of the tournament. Bigger buy-in for each player will give more
hustlers a chance to win some dough.
In 2005, we had a $10 buy-in and a sole winner...ME!
If we decide to do a $20 buy-in,
we can have 3 winners, so bring your cash so I can take it from you again! Luke Boden and Greeg Larsen said they played all the
time, and I spanked 'em hard and rarely play, so anyone can win if you can play even just a little bit.
Pool Tournament
The tournament became a hangout fest again in 2007
Catching up with friends that we
see once a year at Monopalooza takes up our time and planned activities get put aside, especially when the drinks start flowin'.
2005, same story, we were playin' and then the memory of the tourney just faded away. For 2010, we're playing offsite
after skiing at Bad Billy's in downtown Aspen.
Awards Ceremony
Duret, Chronic, Coda and some individuals are donating prizes for 2010. Winning carnival or individual events gets you raffle tickets
so everybody has a chance to win cool prizes. Maybe someday when the monoski becomes HUGE, we'll have international competitors,
BIG sponsors and a women's division so more cool prizes can be won by all!
